Dino Zandegù, the king of Flanders ’67 : ” to win in Roubaix you don’t need umbrellas, but Sonny Colbrelli”

It is always a pleasure to meet Dino Zandegù. His charisma shows itself spontaneously with a splendid alliteration “to win Roubaix you don’t need umbrellas but Sonny Colbrelli” and we jumped at the opportunity to talk to the winner of the 1967 Tour of Flanders about the situation of Italian cycling.

“Dino, when you were racing the Italians were the absolute protagonists of world cycling, but in recent years in global cycling we have lost positions: how do you see the situation of the Azzurri now?”

Last year the Italians did very well, they won the European Championships and then I made a nice joke: “you don’t need an umbrella to win Roubaix but Sonny Colbrelli”, a nice play on words which I hope is also a good omen. for this season. But unlike three or four years ago when the Italians were really in crisis, now both the young and the more experienced riders like Colbrelli and Caruso are very aggressive, they have proven to be a guarantee and now the presence of the Azzurri in front is constant.

For the stage races, in addition to Caruso who has shown he can fight to win the Giro d’Italia, I think the young people will improve and there are already excellent guys, for example Lorenzo Fortunato who won on the Zoncolan but other talents are also showing and these are the signs that we will soon be competitive again even in the big laps, which is a fundamental thing for the whole movement

“For a Lion of Flanders like you, after so many years Bettiol’s success has brought us back as protagonists: your impressions”

Bettiol is an extraordinary talent and I have indelible memories of Flanders. Everyone is very happy to talk about it in the world of this classic and always talking about the Tour of Flanders means making the race feel more to the guys who can focus on this great goal and I’m sure there will be Italian protagonists in the monument race this spring and they could other great satisfactions will soon arrive.
